What an amazing example of excess and affulence. Do 13 year olds really need this, or is it more for the parents.

We live in a society where "keeping up with the Jones's" has been changed to "outdoing everyone else in America." Sure, a key component of capitlism is competition. But, the goal of capitilism overall is to make more money, not to smite your opponents with gaudy gifts and bragging rights.

We see this type of behavior all the time, and it's become so commonplace we often don't notice it anymore. Sometimes, it's just something trivial, like who has the biggest and brightest Christmas decorations. Other times, it can involve sinking yourself into debt just to have the nicest/fastest/biggest car on the block.

It is a sad day in America when a Bar Mitzvahs become just another source of bragging rights for the parents, not the special celebration of manhood it should be.

Then again, maybe the parents are just getting the children for the real test of manhood in America: the daily struggle to outdo everyone else.

Talking about CIA ruse on missing cleric misled Italians - washingtonpost.com Highlights - MSNBC.com

CIA ruse on missing cleric misled Italians - washingtonpost.com Highlights - MSNBC.com

Well, here we have it ladies and gentlemen: Our nation has now been caught lying to one of our staunchest allies in the war on terror.

Caught. Not suspected, no outlandish conspiracy theories, none of that. They were actually caught lying to a friendly foreign govt.

The Italians were already investigating Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr for terrorist activities. It's not like they were the Taliban, providing him with safe have, they were trying to stop him.

But they were trying to do it legally. And I think we all know how this current administration feels about "due process."

In the end, he was tortured in Egypt and who knows what information they could extract from him there. (Most military experts agree that testimonies and confessions under torture are worthless.)

Armando Spataro, the lead prosecutor in Milan said, " . . .If Abu Omar had not been kidnapped, he would now be in prison, subject to a regular trial, and we would have probably identified his other accomplices."

Iraqis may have inked-stained thumbs, but we have blood on our hands.
